This week’s #ThursdayThoughts comess from Rachel Logan.
In the midst of economic uncertainty fuelled by Brexit negotiations, it was refreshing to read the positive findings of the Made Smarter Review published earlier this week. The review, led by Jürgen Maier, answers calls from Government on how the UK can boost productivity in the manufacturing sector by utilising Industrial Digital Technologies (IDTs) including robotics, 3D printing, augmented and virtual reality as well as artificial intelligence. The review focuses on three key themes: adoption; innovation and leadership and proposes that a “National Adoption Programme” is piloted in the North West which would give smaller and medium-sized engineering companies the chance to go to a physical space to experiment with new technologies and see how they might be applied to a process in their own factories. Hopefully the Government will take on board Maier’s recommendations which have the potential to boost productivity and wages in our region, especially in smaller businesses.
