John Marshall is a Senior Associate Solicitor in the Wills, Trusts and Estates team at DTM Legal with over twenty years of experience in dealing with complex trusts, estates and private client matters.  He advises clients on the full range of private clients matters with a particular emphasis on agricultural and business estates.

Education and Training

John graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from The University of Manchester and completed the Law conversion course (CPE) and Legal Practice Course at the College of Law (now University of Law) in Chester.

Having initially trained with a Manchester city law firm, before moving back to his roots in North Wales where he was laterally a partner and Head of Private Client matters in a highly respected law firm. Over the course of his career John Marshall has dealt with the full range of private client matters, having work in a practice which previously held an NFU contract for North and Mid Wales to provide advice and succession planning advice to agricultural clients. His experience spanning more than two decades, John has dealt with advising high net worth clients in providing them with advice on Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Succession Planning.

Role within the DTM Legal Team

John is a member of the Law Society and his work effectively mitigates the impact of Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax on family wealth. Approaching his work with a highly personal approach, advising clients, John ensures that his advice is accessible, explaining complex trusts in way that clients can understand.

John has been involved in many notable cases over the years including advising a wealthy client who was under the Court of Protection who subsequently was found to be misdiagnosed with a form of dementia.  The outcome of the case due to John’s personal intervention (rather than that of the medical profession) lead to a new diagnosis for the client and meant her incarceration in an EMI was ended and she moved into a residential bungalow.

“‘I pride myself in effectively communicating and solving a clients issues in a practical way in terms which a client can fully understand, irrespective how complex the matter may be.’”

ESG and Personal Interests

John has been involved in several charitable projects over the years including acting as the Chairman and Trustee of the Chester and Ellesmere Port Independent Advocacy Service.  He has worked with organisations in  voluntary capacity too providing a full range of counselling services.

John is a seasoned public speaker having given seminars to members of the public on the whole range of private client matters over the years.  He previously was a legal guest speaker for a community radio show and has given talks to members of the public and other professionals, having spoken alongside other financial advisers, Age Concern, Dementia Society, Help the Aged, the Alzheimer’s Society and Mencap to name but a few organisations he has spoken on behalf of over the years

Outside of work, John is a keen walker and he enjoys drawing portraits, which tend to end up making personal Christmas presents!  He also enjoys reading, travelling and supporting his local football team (who will remain nameless).
